A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
