British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
