Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
