The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
